Industrial Design, Material Exploration

This was my exploration project while I was an exchange student at Tama Art University. As I researched materials and techniques unique to Japan, I came across 'washi'. Washi is Japanese paper, and the process to create washi is very labor intensive but results in a very versatile paper that comes in varied thicknesses and strength so it can be used in many applications. One application I had not seen was as a watchband, so I set out to design a watch that would highlight the elegance and strength of washi.

Washi is not normally strong enough to handle daily wear and tear, but I found this material called 'Naoron' which is used in SIWA products. Naoron is washi with plastic mixed into the process to grant it water and enhanced wear resistant. For more infomation check out SIWA.
